The only moral/ethical thing to do with the lady in Florida is to remove the feeding tube. I have not been to Florida to see this lady but I have seen lots of other people in a persistant vegatative state. The real test is how she interacts with her enviroment. If some one would ask her to blink her eyes 2 times and she did it then she would not be in a persistant vegatative state. Have you noticed that the pictures on tv show that her right arm is drawn up? It is called a contracture. She will never be able to use that arm again. No it could not have been prevented. She does not interact with her enviroment. The appearance of tears and what could be misunderstood as laughter is not interacting with one's enviroment. It is reflex much like any other kind of reflex. The only person who is looking out for her best interest is her husband.
How many people do you know of would want to "live" not being able to move, eat, perform their own personal hygiene, or take care of themselves after relieving themselves. It is not just the functioning of a living organism but the quality of life that is at issue here. She has no qualtiy of life and should be allowed to die.
Contrary to popular belief starvation is not a bad way to die. You are only hungry for a short period of time. In fact starvation is a rather painless way to die. The best thing would be to remove the feeding tube and start a morphine drip and turn it up so that she would stop breathing and put her and this whole mess to rest.
